Maria Hahnenkamp counts among the generation of artists whose work is already fundamentally shaped by feminist discourse. Her exploration of photography and of photographic image politics is thus also an examination of female image typologies. Instead of thematizing counter-images here, she is concerned with a manner of exposing the structural violence of the photographic images themselves. The female body is usually granted but a minimal visual presence; the artist carries out an aesthetic intervention which simultaneously traces the representational limitations to which women’s bodies are subjected. The artist initiates a dialectics of the visual—between absence and presence, form and fragmentation, abundance and emptiness, text and ornamentation. It is a dialectics of female representation: the female body is visible and invisible, unattainable and overcoded, liberated and regulated, all at the same time.

On the occasion of the opening Maria Hahnenkamp will present a new artist book.
