Camera Austria has invited the Berlin-based artist Özlem Altin to participate in an exhibition project in September 2017, which is being produced and shown in collaboration with the steirischer herbst festival. The starting point for the endeavour is an exploration of the Camera Austria archive, which is made available to the artist as a kind of extension to her own collection. Books, invitations, press images, handwriting, posters, postcards, printed documents, manuscripts, and much more will flow into the visual production of this project. During several stays in Graz, Altin has viewed this material and photographed it, so as to integrate it into her own narrative. Altin’s methods are reminiscent of artistic research and tentative forms of presentation, as if she were sorting material for a future project. Although the work defies hasty classification, the respective elements are in fact carefully selected for each position within the narrative.
The meeting of different—opposing?—ideas about collecting and arranging material perhaps indicates that archives are always subjected to a subjective selection, referencing a specific cultural and visual milieu that may actually not permit reconstruction from the archive itself. How can that which has not remained visible actually be shown? Is it possible for Altin to add something to the archive of Camera Austria that is lacking, that has not been covered there? Will those images that are missing in the archive now be produced for the exhibition?
